Early Education

His father was in timber business. He had his schooling in Chennai, in P.S. High School, Mylapore and Madras Christian College School. He passed his SSLC (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) examination in 1955.Then he pursued his Intermediate at the St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore during 1955-57. He then returned to Chennai and joined B.A.(Hons.) in mathematics, in Vivekananda College. In 1960 at the age of 19, he joined the TIFR as Research Assistant. And later on got promoted to faculty position of associate professor at the age of 25. He also spent a year at IAS, Princeton.

Research contribution

He wrote his Ph.D. thesis under the guidance of Professor Narasimhan and was awarded the degree by the University of Bombay in 1966. His dissertation was "Deformators of Linear Connections Riemannian Metrics. On the First Cohomology of Discrete Subgroups of Semi-Simple Lie Groups".

Discrete subgroups of Lie groups was his main focus of study. After mid-1970 "congruence subgroup problem" was his major focus. This problem relates the class of discrete subgroups, which gains its importance from number theory.

Administration

He played major role in promoting mathematics in country. He was a member of NBHM since it was founded in 1983 and became its chairman in 1987.
